Trainees come mainly from special schools under the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN), Rainbow Centre, Grace Orchard School and AWWA. Currently, there are about 30 participants benefiting from this programme.
The younger participants get to learn in the small pool with a volunteer each. The older ones get to swim laps in the big pool to build up their stamina and improve on their skills.
Volunteers come from all walks of life including teachers and students from Singapore American School, parents and some dedicated individuals. Regular attendance is required to develop trust between trainee and volunteer. Volunteers assist participants in developing water confidence and providing basic swimming strokes. |
